8-year old scores touchdown and a $500 fine

Touchdown

by Scott Aberdeen

In Syracuse, NY a peewee football team was fined $500 and had their coach suspended for a week for scoring too many points.  Yes, the team was punished for being too good.

The Post Standard reported that Elijah Burrell had intercepted a pass late in the game and did exactly what came naturally (and what anyone would expect)… he ran it back to score a touchdown.  This was Elijah’s first touchdown ever.

But as you will see, this created was a problem.  The Lawrenceville Black Knights were ahead 32-0 in the fourth quarter.  Elijah’s interception return for a touchdown eclipsed the peewee league’s 33-point mercy rule.

Therefore the penalty.  A $500 fine and (AND) the Knights’ coach earned a week long suspension.  Elijah had no idea he was dong something wrong (it was his first year and his first touchdown.)

The coach was not trying to run up the score.  As a matter of fact the Knights tried to let the other team score on the next play, but the other squad refused to catch the ball. (Why would kids with any self-respect willingly accept a football equivalent of welfare?)

This is what happens when far-left ideology is permitted to take hold.  It crushes the spirits of children rather than helping them with self-esteem.  Then slowly the kids come to expect that excelling at something could not be their goal, but rather the fulfillment of the “community”.  They begin to feel guilty for being exceptional at something.

This drives down the ambitions of the young.  (This is not surprising)  Why try harder if you will only be punished for scoring “too many” points, for making “too much” money.  Progressives tell our children it’s simply “not fair” for them to have more, or be better than the next child.

And we can see it at the top of the political food chain.  Have we elected leaders who promote the idea that those who achieve something don’t deserve it?

Today, parents roll their eyes or laugh when they see their children receive a “participation trophy” for a school competition they lost.  But it is not a laughing matter.  Over time progressive school administrators have destroyed the concept of friendly competition in our schools… degrading the achievements of winners and nullifying the important lessons of losing.

“Everyone’s a winner!” our kids are told.  It is the academic version of marxist “collectivism.”

What they did to young Elijah, his family, his team and his coach is wrong.  It is disgusting. And it is truly “un-American.”
